Public at The Brickyard Review

It’s hard not to like a restaurant with a menu item called “The Uncle Jesse”. It’s just one of the many surprising items you’ll find at a restaurant called “Public” located inside the Brickyard in Wichita’s old town district. For months I’ve been hearing rumblings about the food at public, until one day a strategically placed Facebook post caught my eye. I did a little investigation into the menu, and decided I needed to make a visit.

What you’ll find at public, is a true gastropub experience.

Public offers some very interesting takes on classic appetizers, including the public pickles. These are housemaid sweet pickles accompanied with smoked cheeses and salami with crostini. I must admit, I’m usually not a big fan of sweet pickles. But these were delicious.

The main entrées span everything from a delicious looking Banh Mi sandwich, to “Papa Bear’s Brisket Tacos” (which I had and were quite good) All the way to the infamous “Uncle Jesse Pizza”. This happens to be on my “to eat list” the next time I return. The Uncle Jesse is made up of slow roasted beef brisket, mozzarella, blue cheese, honey-wheat dough.

The atmosphere is retro-hip, and what you expect to find at a big-city gastropub. It’s tucked away inside the Brickyard, and when seated along the rustic brick walls you almost feel like you’re dining at a secret location that no one knows about. That is… until the restaurant fills up with the customers.

Overall, Public at the Brickyard is a great addition to the Wichita dining scene. I wish it many years of growth and success.
